Washington Street Mission is now accepting applications to fill its Chaplain Position following the upcoming retirement of the current Chaplain.
Position Title: Chaplain
Status: Full Time
The Mission’s Chaplain will act as the shepherd/pastor/educator for Mission clients. This will include one-on-one pastoral care, facilitating groups, designing spiritual development curriculum to meet WSM and program objectives, and a strong ability to organize volunteers and document program progress.
Responsibilities
- Develop strong relationships with Mission guests
- Provide for group and one-on-one pastoral counseling
- Responsible for organizing and managing a Saturday community breakfast and gospel service in consultation with the leadership team
- Responsible for planning and conducting daily bible study classes of 30-45 minutes
- Responsible for planning and conducting regular anger management classes
- Responsible for accepting, recording and sharing prayer requests from guests weekly with the Mission Prayer team
- In close coordination with the Director of Administration, will conduct Church and Ministry outreach activities including presentations, a monthly Ministry email, and targeted solicitations
- Identify and refer community members to other programs or services at the Mission
- Coordinates with appropriate staff and leadership for referrals to other partner organization services
- Accurately tracks the programs and services delivered
- Assists in other Mission activities as needed
- Work with volunteers and help complete cleaning of the building between 11:00 am and noon.
- Assist with maintenance tasks at the Mission building as needed.
- Helps orient and direct new volunteers.
Job Requirements
- Candidates with lived experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
- 3+ years of documented experience in chaplain or ministry work required.
- Documented theological education or ordination in ministry is preferred.
- Experience with drug and alcohol counseling is valued.
- Previous experience with working with marginalized communities required.
- Must be committed to further training and development in theological studies, counseling and therapeutic techniques.

- Strong understanding of biblical principles and teachings.
- Demonstrate Christ-like behavior and attitude in all job duties and responsibilities.
- Effective leadership and management abilities.
- Demonstrates exceptional judgment and professional boundaries.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of training, evaluating and providing work direction to others.
- Able to analyze information and to define and solve problems. Ability to read and interpret general business periodicals and theological books.
- Able to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on business and process issues.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
- Able to implement program guidelines and offer suggestions for improvement.
- Computer literacy is required. Must be able to operate Microsoft suites and other business-related software.
- Able to be self-motivated and demonstrate initiative.
- Able to support WSM’s statement of Christian faith and share that faith and knowledge with staff and clients.
Hours
40 hours per week. Part-time is a consideration for the right candidate.
Weekday schedule is negotiable. Most Saturday mornings 7:30 – 10:30am are required.
